Golden Ace Disappoints Scott With Lacklustre Wetherby Return

From QAWiki

Jeremy Scott reported last season's Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace to have scoped dirty after she was beaten by Kateira on her reappearance at Wetherby.

With the morning defection of Dysart Enos, just those two lined up in the bet365 Mares' Hurdle but it definitely did not absence for drama.

Harry Skelton set out to ensure there was no hiding location for Cheltenham's surprise heroine and made sure there was a strong speed on his guaranteed stayer Kateira (2-1).

Lorcan Williams appeared delighted enough up until the turn for home, when it appeared that (4-11 favourite) had actually run out of fuel and she was permitted to coast home, beaten 28 lengths.

Scott stated: "I think we met a match-fit horse and she's taken a bit of a blow, we understood she wasn't totally wound-up - but that was disappointing.

"We were up versus a mare who stays well and they went hard. Maybe it was the quicker ground and the truth it was her first run of the season.

"Hopefully something appears, you constantly want a reason, something will come out in the wash and I'm sorry she didn't run better. I had to get up really early to get here and I was hoping for a very great run.

"She had plenty of beans, she 'd been so well in your home, possibly it was the travelling. Coming into the bend Lorcan said she felt fantastic, but then Harry kicked and she flattened out.

"She most likely wasn't as straight as I thought however even so, it was frustrating. It wasn't exclusively the ground as she just stopped.

"Harry is tactically very conscious and put us to the sword."

Dan Skelton was not getting carried away by the success but has always ranked his mare.

"I'm really pleased however clearly you have to take the type with a pinch of salt since to my eyes the other mare was beaten after the first," he said.

"They winged along after the that. She 'd been off the track for a while with an intricate pelvis injury but while she just beat one horse, she looked as excellent as ever.

"Se might go to Ascot for a ₤ 100,000 race in a few weeks."

Scott later on told the stewards that Golden Ace had actually scoped dirty, although the veterinary officer "took a look at the mare post-race during regular testing and had absolutely nothing to report".
